Sitting Can Be Deadly

The more time you spend sitting, the more likely you are to die at an earlier age, according to a number of recent studies. This even applies to individuals who are not obese, and work out after a long day of sitting at the office. The most recent study tracked more than 100,000 adults over the course of 14 years.

Researchers from the American Cancer Society asked over 100,000 men and women to fill out a questionnaire regarding their level of physical activity.

Even after the results had been adjusted for the body mass index and smoking, researchers found that women who sit more than six hours a day were more than 37 percent more likely to die sooner than women who sit less than three hours a day.

Individuals who participate in regular exercise were at a lower risk but still had a significant risk of dying early. Individuals who work at jobs that require them to sit for most of the day had the highest chance of dying at a younger age.

The study found that individuals that sit more than six hours, and are not moving around for more than three and a half hours a day have the highest risk, with more than 94 percent of them dying at a younger age.

The study says a lot about a generation that sits behind their computer for a good portion of the day. In order to avoid sitting for too long, start exercising more, and be sure to take frequent trips around or outside of the office.
