The mathematically beautiful butt

Research shows that there’s a universal ideal for a beautiful behind. Intrigued by Singh’s Theory that the attractiveness of the female torso is directly related to the proportions of the waist and buttocks, South Carolina plastic surgeon Thomas Roberts, MD, has identified the ideal waist-to-hip ratio as roughly 0.7 across the ethnic spectrum.

By looking back as far as ancient Egypt and Greece and analyzing sculptures and statues, this ideal ratio has withstood the test of time, even as body ideals have changed. In fact, Miss America pageant winners have consistently had this ratio for over six decades, despite a gradual decrease in body weight.

“For most women, the ideal shape tends to follow cultural patterns,” Dr. Roberts says, “and new methods allow us to improve the shape of the posterior on any person.”
